Job Summary:
The Ophthalmic Nurse will provide specialized nursing care to patients with ophthalmic conditions, ensuring the delivery of safe, efficient, and effective patient care. The nurse will be responsible for assisting ophthalmologists in performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, providing patient education, and administering medications as prescribed.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care for patients with ophthalmic conditions.
2. Collaborate with the ophthalmology team to develop and implement individualized care plans.
3. Perform diagnostic tests, including visual acuity assessments, tonometry, and eye examinations.
4. Administer medications, eye drops, and ointments as prescribed by physicians.
5. Assist in ophthalmic surgical procedures, ensuring a sterile environment and providing pre- and post-operative care.
6. Educate patients and their families about eye conditions, treatment plans, and necessary lifestyle modifications.
7. Monitor and document patients' progress, including vital signs, symptoms, and treatment effectiveness.
8. Provide support and guidance to patients undergoing vision rehabilitation or low vision care.
9. Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated and comprehensive patient care.
10. Maintain accurate and detailed patient records, including medical histories, treatments, and outcomes.
11. Adhere to infection control protocols and maintain a clean and safe working environment.
12. Stay updated on current ophthalmic nursing practices, attend relevant training sessions, and actively participate in professional development activities.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BScN) or equivalent qualification.
2. Active nursing license and registration with the appropriate nursing regulatory body.
3. Minimum of 2 years of experience as a registered nurse in a healthcare setting, preferably in ophthalmology or a related field.
4. In-depth knowledge of ophthalmic conditions, treatments, and surgical procedures.
5. Proficient in performing diagnostic tests, including visual acuity assessments and tonometry.
6. Ability to administer medications, eye drops, and ointments accurately and safely.
7. Strong understanding of infection control protocols and sterile techniques.
8. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients, their families, and the healthcare team.
9. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
10. Attention to detail and strong documentation skills.
11. Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and privacy.
12. Basic computer skills, including proficiency in electronic medical record systems.
